Oh boy! Last week went by in a flash, mostly because we got back from The Ranch, then had to jump in full-steam ahead. In an effort to get out of the house while FitDad did some noisy home improvement (more on our office re-do in another post), FitBoy and I strollered down to our local farmers market (yep, that's right, FitBoy in a stroller!) and picked up some non-sprayed:
- Gorgeous plums
- Hearty rye bread
- Throwaway-ripe tomatoes (at a discount)
- An onion
Add this to this week's farm stand score:
- Carrots
- Lemons
- Mint
- Chard
- Kale
- Heirloom tomatoes
- Avocados (I have eyes only for Hass)
And we've got a lot to work with!
Last week, I also managed to sprout some lentils and soak and cook black beans in the Crock Pot.
Here's what we're up to this week:
- Gazpacho - recipe by Jenna at Chive Talkin' (Here's to hoping it doesn't taste like V8 like my previous gazpacho attempts. She promises no.)
- Flatbread pizzas (goat cheese, chard, kale, heirloom tomatoes)
- Black bean tacos (via Smitten Kitchen)
- A couple nights of eating out (one with FitDad's boss and wife, and another Summer tradition: Date Night!)
I'm especially grateful for the kind spirit of our neighbors lately. I'm fighting a cold and haven't been able to get enough hot water with lemon. Our neighbor has two streetside lemon trees, so I went over (with FitBoy -- his job is to flash the sparkly smile) and asked if he'd mind if we picked up some of the ripe ones. Nope. Then our other neighbor picked us a bag of apricots and handed them over the fence (after she'd brought over her cactus-queso fresco-chile goodness to share the day before).
Any ideas on how or what to share with my neighborly neighbors?
